Good Golly, Miss Dolly!
We went to the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival yesterday. My sole purpose for going was to see miss Dolly Parton, live and in concert. Of course when such a festival is free (that's right, free), you can't expect there not to be a huge crowd. Except for some reason, I did expect that I'd be able to get close to the stage and see Dolly in all her rhinestone glory. But the madding crowd was so thick that we were relegated to the way back, where the less interested folks were chatting and wrestling with their dogs, and we could neither see nor hear. So, after straining to hear a few songs and a failed attempt to get closer, we decided to cut our losses and wander on. And my first attempt at being a groupie was also a bust. On a lark, I joined the crowd that was pressed around Dolly's tour bus. After waiting for about a half hour, all I saw was Dolly's sparkling turquoise arm as she waved from behind the bus door and then was quickly whisked to the stage. I guess I will actually have to buy a concert ticket if I ever want to see Dolly perform.
(Even though I wasn't able to witness it, Dolly's opening song was "9 to 5." Which is funny because that was the song I sang on Thursday night for my first-ever Karaoke experience.)
In other bluegrass news, the South Austin Jug Band and the Hot Buttered Rum String Band totally rocked! My legs are sore today from all the jigging.
